Local Authority Schemes

We can tailor any policy to meet the needs of a Local Authority. We understand that Local Authority schemes need to be flexible and responsive as well as transparent in terms of cost, policy type, and the types of cover provided.

Our experience also enables us to prepare and submit tenders for Local Authority schemes within stringent time limits. Flexible Schemes

There are a number of ways we can work in partnership with Local Authorities:

• 'Stop loss' insurance’ – some Local Authorities have their own mutual insurance scheme but would like commercial insurance in order to protect the scheme against the cost of claims running above a certain threshold e.g. the cost of claims running above 115% of the total contribution paid in by each school. Alternatively Local Authorities may wish to cover any individual absence exceeding a certain number of days e.g. any absence exceeding 15 days.
• Act as the recommended Local Authority supplier –Local Authorities may wish to act as a conduit to the individual schools (with the Local Authority acting as the bulk purchasing scheme) thereby giving flexible policy options on excess periods, daily benefits, choice of which staff to be covered etc, and with the advantage of preferential rates relative to the numbers of schools opting into the scheme.
• 'Mutual' (pooled) Scheme – some Local Authorities may wish to continue with the same pooled scheme as used previously. We can look at taking over this scheme on the same basis providing run-in cover together with various other policy options.
• Help with the Management of an existing Local Authority scheme

Flexible Policy/Cover Options:

• Choice of daily benefit and excess period (first day cover onwards).
• Maternity cover, paternity leave, adoption leave, jury service or other official duties, bereavement and compassionate leave, suspension cover, stress-related illness with no additional excess.
• NEW – School support service – including stress rehabilitation.
• Cover for pre-existing conditions.
• Cover for pre-planned surgery.
• Run-in cover for ongoing claims.
• Phased return/no repeat excess for interrupted claims.

Risk Management

We can help Local Authorities identify their absence risks by providing monthly scheme monitoring reports with annual or monthly absence analysis, comparison reports, broken down by area, school type (primary, junior, secondary, or special school).
